Founded in 1902 as Wake Forest College's medical department (originally Wake Forest University Bowman Gray School of Medicine, named for its benefactor in 1941), the school evolved into a premier academic medical center. It gained national distinction for pioneering work in regenerative medicine through the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, one of the world's leading tissue engineering research centers, and for its strong programs in cardiovascular research, cancer care, and aging research.
