Overview
Founded in 2011 through a collaborative effort between Western Michigan University and two major Kalamazoo health systems (Borgess Health and Bronson Healthcare), the school was later renamed in honor of a major gift from the Stryker Johnston Foundation, recognizing orthopedic surgeon and Stryker Corporation founder Dr. Homer Stryker. It achieved full accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and has grown into a distinct, degree-granting medical school affiliated with, but administratively separate from, WMU. The school is best known for its community-based medical education model, integrating students early into clinical settings within the Kalamazoo healthcare community.
