Founded in 1693 by royal charter, William & Mary is the second-oldest institution of higher education in the United States, deeply intertwined with the founding of the nation. Located in Williamsburg, Virginia, its alumni include three U.S. presidents (Jefferson, Monroe, Tyler) and it is credited with founding the first Phi Beta Kappa chapter and pioneering the honor system in America.
